James Wherley has taught for 35 years in the Tuscarawas Valley area, serving at Conotton Valley, Strasburg, Tuscarawas Central Catholic and New Philadelphia High. He received his Bachelors of Science from The Ohio State University in 1969 and a Masters in Science Education from the University of Akron in 1976.
Mrs. Wherley has taught Biology, General Science, mathematics, Physics and currently teaches Chemistry I and II at NPHS. He has coached many different sports over theses years in either the head coach or an assistant coach position. He has served on various school improvement committees and is currently the science department head. Along with the late Richard Wright, Wherley developed Summer Science Camp, and ungraded hands-on instructional experience geared to elementary students. He has published articles in The Science Teacher, the magazine of the National Science Teachers Association, developed two inservice seminars for teachers, and wrote a manual of chemistry lessons entitled "Activity Based Chemistry" and is a Praxis III evaluator.
He is married to the former Sally Shott and they have four children, Jim (Susanne) of Villa Hills Kentucky, Brian (Jenn) of Perrysburg Ohio, Daniel, a graduate of Ohio State University, and Hallie who is currently attending Ohio State. He is a member of Grace United Church of Christ in Stone Creek and has serves as Mayor and councilman for the Village of Stone Creek for the last 12 years.
