Quaker Foundation Classroom Grant Recipients

The Quaker Foundation awarded 31 classroom grants this school year totaling $12,458.56.  The following is a description of the grants.

 

Debbie Pallas at Central Elementary School

Target Population: First Grade Students

Project Title:  First Grade ReaderÕs Theater Ð Oral Reading Practice with a Purpose

Amount of Grant:  $240.59

ReaderÕs Theater will be used to help first grade students improve fluency, word recognition and comprehension.

 

Rex Degler at Welty Middle School

Target Population:  130 Seventh Grade Science Students

Project Title:  Digital Vision Viewer

Amount of Grant:  $325.00

The Megapixel Digital Vision Viewer connects to the teacherÕs compound microscope and allows the class to view what the teacher is viewing using a computer monitor or television screen.

 

Jamie Page at Welty Middle School

Target Population:  130 Seventh Grade Science Students

Lynsey A. Stitz at New Philadelphia High School

Target Population:  9th-12th Grade Students, Elders and Soldiers

Project Title:  Students Give Back

Amount of Grant:  $459.75

This project serves the community of New Philadelphia and our nations soldiers by sending cards of encouragement, cooking food, sending care packages, and making blankets for those individuals who are in need.  Community nursing homes and deployed soldiers are our main focus.

 

Becky Pallotto South Elementary School

Target Population:  Elementary Students and Classroom Teachers, Grades K-5

Project Title:  Begin with the Brain

Amount of Grant:  $437.75

ÒBegin with the BrainÓ is a collection of practical sources for elementary teachers to use for successful and effective application of brain based practices.

 

Betsy Becknell, Brittany Grove and Sally Korns at West Elementary School

Target Population:  Students in Grade 2 and their Parents

Project Title:  Family Math Night

Amount of Grant:  $486.60

Students and their parents work together on interactive Math games to enhance their abilities to count money using coins and paper money, make change and exchange amounts of money.

 

Judy McGill at Welty Middle School

Target Population:  Open to All Students

Project Title:  Wonderful Kids at Welty

Amount of Grant:  $479.80

The Wonderful Kids at Welty Program is to empower Middle School Students to learn, discuss, and confront various stressors that challenge our Middle School students today.  The program will have students recognize the strength within themselves and with their friends, make better decisions, and avoid the pitfalls of early adolescence.

 

Cheryl Montgomery at Welty Middle School

Target Population:  6th Grade Students

Project Title:  Fun and Games to Develop Logical Thinking

Amount of Grant: $278.70

This project will bring games such as Meta-Forms and Spectrangle into the classroom.  The student will use logical thinking and problem solving skills while having fun playing the games.

 

Amy Biggs at South Elementary School

Target Population:  Students who are multi-handicapped with physical, as well as cognitive limitations.  These students struggle with reading and written composition.

Project Title:  Electrified Reading

Amount of Grant:  $336.10

This project is establishing a method of capturing written text and transposing it into electronic text which can then be presented in an auditory format with vision supports on the computer.

 

Jody Brady, Scott Hommard, Kip Brady and Jim Wherley at New Philadelphia High School

Target Population:  Science Students Grades 9-12

Project Title:  Lab Refrigerator/Freezer

Amount of Grant: $500.00

The Science Department will improve their lab capabilities by installing a refrigerator/freezer with an ice maker.  Students in grades 9-12 will be involved in lab work in the following classes: Biology CP and regular, Physical Science CP and regular, Chemistry, AP Chemistry, AP Biology, and Genetics and Forensics.

 

 

 

Rae Ann Bowden at Central Elemetary School

Target Population:  Kindergarten Students

Project Title:  Literacy Learners

Amount of Grant:  $498.83

Through the use of the Grant materials, Kindergarten children will have differentiated experiences ÒplayingÓ with letters, sounds, words, phrases, and sentences to strengthen Literacy skills.

 

Jane Gerber and Tammy Hatfield at West Elementary School

Target Population:  First Grade Classrooms at West

Project Title:  Cards, Counting and Cookies

Amount of Grant:  $325.32

This is a program to improve Math skills.  It is targeted for first grade students using Everyday Math games and manipulatives.  It encourages the reinforcement of math skills and parent involvement at home using the Everyday Math curriculum.

 

Cheryl Feutz at East Elementary School

Target Population:  All Students Grades 1-5

Project Title:  Empowering Writers

Amount of Grant:  $385.00

Students in grades 1-5 will use the Co:Writer computer program to improve their composition skills.  The program helps students translate thoughts into writing that is rich and detail filled while helping those students develop self-confidence in their writing ability.

 

Marci Hubbard at Welty Middle School

Target Population:  All 6th Grade students

Project Title:  Fun and Games to Develop Logical Thinking

Amount of Grant:  $471.20

This project will bring games such as Blokus and Eguilibrio into the classroom.  The student will use logical thinking and problem solving skills while having fun playing the games.

 

Chelle Bauer at Central Elementary School

Target Population:  First Grade

Project Title:  Math Tiling

Amount of Grant:  $487.20

The first grade students of Central Elementary will investigate basic skills as stated in the Math Content Standards by the integration of individualized hands on activities in the regular classroom setting through out the year.

 

Leigh Ann Jones and Jessie Winters at West Elementary School

Target Population:  Kindergarten Students at West Elementary

Project Title: Math in the Arts

Amount of Grant:  $500.00

This is a project to improve students understanding of numbers and number concepts through the integration of mathematics and fine arts experiences.  It likewise will encourage parent involvement in the math education of the West Kindergarten students and the necessary home learning opportunities to ensure success.

 

Shari Albaugh at Central Elementary School

Target Population:  Central Students Grade 1-2

Project Title:  Building Fluency

Amount of Grant:  $495.74

Children will practice and build fluency in oral reading through the use of a variety of texts,     audio CDs, and games.

 

 

Chelle Bauer at Central Elementary School

Target Population:  First Grade

Project Title:  Watching Our Changing World in Social Studies

Amount of Grant:  $490.15

The first grade students at Central will investigate basic skills as stated in the Social Studies Content Standards by the integration of educational videos to enhance projects and activities in the regular classroom setting through out the year.

 

Cheryl Feutz  at East Elementary School

      Target Population:  Primary Students

      Project Title:  Math Success with Marcy Cook

      Amount of Grant:  $106.40

      This Grant will provide students with the opportunity to experience success in math while                                                                                                  doing learning activities using the 100 chart and number tiles.   

 

Michelle Berg and Rebecca Welfley at East Elementary School

Target Population:  Third Graders

Project Title:  Times Past

Amount of Grant:  $140.00

This is a day long presentation to third graders incorporating the life and times of 18th century America.

 

Kelli Gardner at Welty Middle School

Target Population: 8th Grade Family Living

Project Title:  Money Management

Amount of Grant:  $394.25

The grant will be used in the 8th grade Family Living classes for a money management unit.  The money will buy activity kits which allow each student their own checkbook and other realistic materials so they have a more hands-on approach to learning about money.

 

Natalie Schie at Welty Middle School

Target Population: 7th Grade Red House

Project Title:  Student Tales

Amount of Grant:  $497.88

By giving middle school students the opportunity to create real books they write and illustrate themselves through professional publishing, I hope to see improved writing skills, increased self-confidence and pride, as well as increased skills in technology.  Their efforts result in an actual four-color, hardbound, professionally published book.  This project is aimed at helping students to achieve a measure of success through their own abilities as a writer.

 

Linda Schneider at Welty Middle School

Target Population:  7th Grade White House

Project Title:  Student Tales

Amount of Grant:  $497.88

Project Title:  Novel Dialogue

Amount of Grant:  $500.00

This voluntary literacy program is aimed at providing five guided book dialogues for high school students to improve and initiate critical reading skills and allow students a forum for reflection and discussion of their selected book titles.

 

Patty Riker at York Elementary School

Target Population:  York 2nd Grade Students

Project Title:  Guided Reading

Amount of Grant:  $500.00

These leveled books will be used to update and round out older classroom sets for guided reading groups.  With a wider range of backgrounds, skill levels and readers, these fiction and nonfiction sets will expand student options with quality literature for guided reading groups.

 

Sherri Norman at York Elementary School

Target Population:  York Special Education/Regular Education

Project Title:  Child Centered Reading

Amount of Grant:  $250.00

Language and vocabulary skills are fostered using a digital camera to promote child centered reading and writing.

 

Shay Young and Joyce Anderson at South Elementary School

Target Population: Kindergarten, First, & Second Grade Students

Project Title:  Books: The Laboratory to Learning

Amount of Grant:  $500.00

This project will help emergent readers to become fluent readers through an individualized, guided reading program that supports developmental learning for all children reguardless of varying ability leves.

Target Population:  Students in Grades K-5 at East and West Elementaries

Project Title: Dance and Movement Resources

Amount of Grant: $104.45

Dance and movement resources for music classes.

Project Title:  Portable Sound Equipment

Amount of Grant:  $499.98

Portable sound system for East and West elementary music classes.

 

Starr Cox at East Elementary School

Target Population: Students with significant reading difficulties

Project Title: Literacy Start

Amount of Grant:  $494.99

Start to Finish Literacy Starters for beginning reading is a multisensory technology that will increase student attention and encourage literacy development.

 

Lori Ricklic and Andi Lukens at Welty Middle School

Target Population:  6th Grade Students

Project Title:  6th Grade Autobiographies

Amount of Grant:  $450.00

Students in the 6th grade white house and red house created a personal autobiography booklet during the month of May.  This project is used to implement several state standards in writing and it is also a wonderful keepsake for students and parents.
